New research activities with Bau Kunst Erfinden evolve the potentials of sliced and spliced willow branches to be used as solid-wood monofilament. The immense flexibility of particular willow breeds combined with their specific natural light-weight structure might offer to use willow monofilament for industrially produced eco-friendly light-weight structures.

Out to research the possibilities of lathing unusual materials we developed these shapes, processes, stories and haptics. Some of them are casted in lathed wooden moulds. All materials and shapes are connected to the region of the Oderbruch, a rural and for Germany rather empty space with intresting especially historical relatedness in the quiet north-east of Berlin. The new ambitious managers of the Museum Altranft asked Sven, Christian and me to connect craft and design to form new ideas, shapes and processes with regional materials for the craft with strong references to the region.

Objects from bamboo

for the Urban Mela, Bangalore, India
Residency at 1 Shanthiroad Gallery promoted by Goethe Institut
May & June 2012

The Urban Mela was an event within the framework of “Germany and India 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities”. German companies and institutes displayed their projects on the topic „StadtRäume – CitySpaces”. I was invited by the Goethe Institute Bangalore to create interactive objects from bamboo for the public event. Two 3 m long heavy swings and a teetering hexagon brought people together in playful or restful moments. The bamboo hold in shape just by tying them with rope. The way the rope is laid the shape is enhanced by putting weight on the structure. The objects are built with the help of Manasaram Architects, Bangalore.

Material Workshop in "Goethe Lounge"
for children during the Urban Mela Bangalore, India
together with Indian designers Gaurav Juyal & Dushyant Pundir
within the project "Germany & India 2011-2012 : Infinite Opportunities"

During the Urban Mela in Bangalore Gaurav, Dushyant and me opened the Goethe Lounge pavillon to let the kids of Bangalore express how they want their dream city to be. It all became a fantastic playground for all of us. Sometimes the chaos did not end in a desaster only because of the cool support of a lot of Urban Mela volunteers. Thanks also to Gabor Doleviczenyi who sneaked by to throw a little graffiti at the wall. And thanks to the supersupporting team of Goethe-Institute / Max Mueller Bhavan.

Fotoprojekt

Rabarbarakaramella
Concept and Design for a Rhubarb Candy and it's brand
for the small farm Langamýri in South Iceland
Reykjavík, Iceland . 2008

In 2008 the icelandic designers Arna Rut Þorleifsdóttir, Brynjar Sigurðarson, Kristín Þóra Sigurðardóttir, María Markovic, Brynhildur Pálsdóttir, Guðfinna Mjöll Magnúsdóttir and me formed the team Stúdió Stéfnumót to create a rhubarb caramel and it's brand Rabarbía. The work was motivated by the economic-political situation of Iceland, that is well described in the inspiring book "Dreamland" from Andri Snær Magnason.

The Rabarbía caramel is made from childhood memories of rhubarb, when children took a rhubarb stick and sugar in a glass to dip the rhubarb in. Rhubarb was a sweet treat in the minds of many. The rhubarb caramel is shaped like a rhubarb stick and the packaging is designed with a view to the product being well suited as a present for any occasion. The caramel is handmade with care by the farmers and developed in collaboration with the Iceland Academy of the Arts Designers and Farmers Project, Matís and the master baker Örvar Birgisson.

Rabarbía is the trademark of the farmers at Langamýri in Skeiðar, Kjartan Ágústsson and Dorothee Lubecki. The Langamýri rhubarb fields are organically certified and the rhubarb is the foundation of the products.

Stockists

The main stockists for The Rabarbía products are Frú Lauga, Melabúðin, Búrið, Vínberið, Landnámssetrið í Borgarnesi and the duty free shop at the airport Leifsstöð.
